When I say "harem" most of you will think about a bunch of beautiful maidens brought to serve and satisfy a mighty king or emperor. Because, if a man can have fifty women waiting to go to bed with him, why wouldn't he, right? It is heaven But, that word, as well as many others lost it's origin and true meaning in this modern era. The truth is that harems were dangerous places, often more violent and bloody than actual battlefields. Because every beautiful fragile woman in it was there with a single purpose- to rule the world one day.
To be the king's favorite, to give him many sons for successors, and to rule side by side as a queen. But, as there can be many lovers and entertainment girls, there can be only one queen. And this was clear to every one of them, from the first moment of stepping into a palace. Behind the closed doors of women's chambers and far away from soft sheets of ruler's bed, a merciless war raged on. War fought not with swords, but with lies and gossip, betrayal and alliances, patience and endurance, brains and master manipulation. A war with no honor or integrity. Sides were changed as the wind of power blows and no one was safe. Of course, in those conditions back then, and lives of their children often at stake, there was no other choice.
Luckily, those times have long passed but I notice visible trails of that mind set and behavior in every large group of women when they fight for prestige and a "throne" of some kind. And the modeling scene is a perfect example. The deeper I go into it, and the more people I get to know and make contact with, this becomes more obvious. Behind the pretty faces and flashy clothes and makeup, behind sweet posts of gratitude and success, there is a history of deceit and complex tactics. Who do you like and don't like, who are you loyal to, who has your back, who is no longer needed and can be replaced, who will give you more, who will be more influential and help you in your career, who will be the first to do this or that, who is copying whose style... It goes to the point where some models talk trash about others, destroying their chances to work with some brands or designers. It all comes down to who is more popular and influential, and whose word means more. If there is a new pretty girl who starts rising fast, everybody else hates her and sees her as competition. Everyone is competition, in fact. I see it all around me and it terrifies me. Especially because the throne they are fighting for is not even real! Every model is the best, is the queen to someone, same as even the "biggest" models are just not interesting to others. It is a minefield. You have to be careful what you say, who you say it to, and who do you openly support or hate. It all comes back to you one day. I heard it so many times. If yo want to work with this brand you must be friends with this person, but you can't be with this other person. I see models with bad photos and no charisma making huge progress just because there is someone "with power" having their back, and I see mean girls getting their way because they stick together. Unfortunately, it is a world where art and beauty and a pure heart don't matter at all.
You can try to choose not to be a part of this, but the war sucks you in eventually, even of you are not looking for it. You either find your role in it, or you get lost in this wast sea of our ever growing alternative modeling world. Everyone wants to be the queen, the best, the goth princess, the goddess, the ultimate goth model. And things some of them do to get there are just pathetic.
Many times I wish things were more simple and sincere, but luckily for me, I don't want to be a pretty girly princess. I have no interest in wearing the crown.
I prefer carrying a sword.
